Being an ardent lover of nature & long walks, one of my favorite things to do is hiking. I was extremely thrilled to have found a small group of other hiking enthusiasts called The Hash House Harriers in Abuja, popularly known as The Hash. As much as I love to walk alone, having my friends join me for one of the hash days was a delight.
(Nicole: Thankfully, the weather was perfect plus we got an easy trail this time, everyone conquered it with ease I think….)
(Isoken: Easy trail? I fell down lol. If you are clumsy like me, then pleaseeeee, before you start, break a branch from one of the trees to support you when walking/climbing. Also if you don’t work out often, don’t walk too fast at the beginning so you don’t lose your breath quickly, take your time, don’t follow Nicole, there’s no trophy at the end.)
(Ifueko: Hahaha, yeah, Nicole always walks too fast with her headphones. Anyway wear protective clothing, no shorts, I would recommend ankle length tights, the ants can be quite vicious you wouldn’t want those creepy crawlers biting you.)
The hash is a perfect way to escape the typical city life and it’s held every second Saturday of the month. What to expect? Approximately 3 hours of your time, new places around Abuja, a couple of passionate runners & leisure walkers/ exercise, scenic views, occasional sunsets, steep/bushy trails.
And the most anticipated is the open bar in the ‘Blue truck’. Halfway through the hike, we get about 15minutes break to refresh with (water/beer/soda) and socialise.
P.S: You want to be extremely comfortable while hiking so wear comfortable footwear, the type that can tolerate slippery surfaces. You should also try getting a back pack and a water bottle, because you don’t get any water till recess time.
There’s an upcoming hash this Saturday, the 16th.
Venue: Riverplate Park (Durban park), opposite Abia house, Wuse II.
Time: 3.00PM (No African time)
Extras: N1000 to “Hash” (hike) alone and N3000 for hash +Chop (“Hike+-Chop”, buffet dinner held after the hash at a restaurant)
